Kingfisher Journeys is proud to be the first operator in Rwanda to provide professionally guided kayaking and canoeing journeys on the lakes and rivers of this beautiful country. We began in September 2015, and are committed to delivering high quality services to all our customers and partners. However, we hope that this will achieve more than simply giving our clients a brilliant experience. In addition to creating new employment opportunities for our Rwandan guides and other staff, we are also engaging with, purchasing services from and supporting rural communities wherever we go and with sustainability fundamental to our ethos, we keep our environmental footprint low. Our director Our director, Steve Venton, is an experienced sea kayak leader and canoe instructor. Along with many other international qualifications, including outdoors first aid, he has the British Canoe Union's highest level of sea kayaking leader qualification (5-Star leader). With 20 years of experience, Steve has led numerous easy as well as many very challenging kayaking trips on rivers and the sea in many countries around the world. He has also led two remote canoeing expeditions through the rainforests of South America. As a volunteer for numerous organisations over the years he has shared his knowledge and trained many people to enjoy this exciting sport. Steve also has a background in the corporate world, and an MBA in sustainable business. Meet our Rwandan Paddlesport Leaders Whilst there are many traditional canoes throughout Africa, modern, high-quality kayaking and canoeing are new to Rwanda. However by adopting the British Canoeing system, we have ensured that our guides operate at internationally recognised standards. Gratien Uwikunda and Eloi Ntsinzi are now qualified British Canoeing Paddlesport Leaders in their own right and Sandrine Umwizerwa is an experienced canoeist who was trained in Australia. Our equipment We use modern sea kayaks on Lake Kivu and open canoes on the Mukungwa River. Our quality equipment also includes paddles, spray decks and buoyancy aids (life jackets) in a variety of sizes. For overnight journeys we can provide dry bags to keep your personal items dry, tents, roll-mats and cooking equipment.
