Whales, Dolphins & Mountains
Lying in the middle of the mystical Atlantic Ocean, the wonderful Azores islands are a permanent home or point of passage for more than a third of the entire world’s whale and dolphin species.
This may be one of the best places on earth to observe these magnificent creatures. Gentle sperm whales, active common dolphins, jumping bottlenose dolphins and mysterious Risso’s dolphins are present around the islands all year-round. On the other hand, Spring is ideal to see the giants of the ocean: migrating baleen whales such as the biggest animal who has ever lived: the blue whales; but also fin whales and sei whales. When working with wild animals, everyday is a surprise!
After about 3 hours on an ocean expedition, one will recharge batteries with some time for lunch. Afterwards, our experienced guide will accompanny you on a sightseeing excursion to one of the wildest areas of the island: Fogo Lake. The vividly colored blue lake is known as one of the most beautiful lakes of the island. On our way down the mountain, we will visit Caldeira Velha where you can relax in a thermal pool surrounded by endemic vegetation
Furnas Thematic Tour
On this complete tour, you will feel and experience the volcanic origins of the island in Furnas, a magical place full of geothermal activity. After the pick up in Ponta Delgada at 9am, we will start by a visit to the local tea factory Gorreana before reaching the viewpoint over Furnas: Pico do Ferro. You will definitely have to take pictures for your album about the Azores. Then, we will go to the Caldeiras das Furnas to visit the famous fumaroles and taste gasocarbonic mineral waters from different springs.
Passing by the Lagoa das Furnas, the local restaurant is our next stop to taste the famous “Cozido”, one of the most emblematic dishes of the Azores. It is a mixture of regional vegetables and meats cooked with the help of volcanic activity. A gastronomic experience you cannot miss. This is a very special meal cooked only with the steam of the Earth. After lunch, we will visit the centenary Terra Nostra botanical garden, famous for its extraordinary collection of native plants from the Azores, as well as others from all over the world that have adapted to the local conditions. At the end of the visit, you are invited to go for a dip in an iron-rich hot water swimming pool that has a temperature of 35-40oC (95-104°F), a relaxing experience.
On the way back to Ponta Delgada, we will pass by the South Coast and also at Vila Franca do Campo where we will be able to see the Princess Ring islet and know more about the first capital of the island and the strong earthquake of 1522.
Sete Cidades Active Jeeps & Lakes
This is an active tour that combines dirt paths with kayak and bicycle activities at Lagoa das Sete Cidades.Enjoy this wonderful landscape from a different perspective in a jeep. We will take you to the top of Sete Cidades caldera stopping at some points of interest such as Pico do Carvão, Pico da Cruz and Lomba do Vascoviewpoint.
A small stop will be made in the center of Sete Cidades village, followed by a passage next to thePeninsula and then we will stop at the famous viewpoint of Vista do Rei. The other part of the day is to enjoy Sete Cidades by bike and kayak! This is an excellent way to explore nature for those who enjoy active holidays. Our guide will give interesting information about Sete Cidades and also explain how to go kayaking.
Canyoning Ribeira dos Caldeirões - Half Day
We will start this adventure with the pick up at 8:15 am in Ponta Delgada. This tour will take place in an incredible scenery: Ribeira dos Caldeirões in Nordeste, a protected area in the Northeastern part of São Miguel island.
Warm up walking up the trail until reaching the starting point of this exciting adventure. We will jump, slide and abseil in a 100% natural environment, descending along the stream that flows from the mountain top, completely surrounded by lush forest.
The descent begins with scrambling and spending some time exploring down the stream, getting used to this new practice. Abseiling along waterfalls is an unforgettable experience in which you will feel the power of nature close to you. The guides who will come with you all along the tour will take pictures and videos of you to keep a souvenir from this experience.
Hiking Pico da Vara
During this special hike, we will reach the highest point of São Miguel island and its most ancient side! Hiking Pico da Vara means visiting one of the two Natural Reserves of the island and being completely surrounded by endemic vegetation. This area is also very important for its natural hydric resources.
Starting from the Planalto dos Graminhais, we are going to see the wind turbines that produce part of the green energy of the island and we will enjoy the sights of an area dedicated to the endemic vegetation protection and conservation. We will cross the volcanic complex of Nordeste, looking over the beautiful landscape of Povoação caldeira and reach Pico da Vara.
Here, at the altitude of 1,103m above the sea level, enjoying the views of São Miguel, we will take a break andrest a bit. When ready, we will follow the path down and continue in direction of our last stop, the park of Ribeira dos Caldeirões, before returning to Ponta Delgada.
